Sept. 22 trends: Debates and tweetstorms

LAST 24 HOURS IN A NUTSHELL:

Top House hashtags:

  1. #va10debate
  2. #flippablue
  3. #electpawomen

Top Senate hashtags:

  1. #betomania
  2. #betofortexas
  3. #txsenatedebate

Interesting climbers:

  • #forthepeople: This appears to be part of a fairly substantial tweet campaign from Democrats in Pennsylvania, supporting candidates particularly in PA05 and PA06.
  • #workersdeservemore: Another hashtag from the PA05 and PA06 Democrats.
  • #protectourcare: While also strongly used in Pennsylvania (PA07 and PA05 in particular, this also makes a strong appearance in NVSen, where Democratic candidate Jacky Rosen is arguing that incumbent Dean Heller has broken promises on healthcare.

GENERAL TRENDS

On the Senate side, we’re seeing here the first giant surge on behalf of Democrat Beto O’Rourke in #TXSen, in part the results of an official tweetstorm called by the candidate’s supporters on the eve of the first debate between O’Rourke and Republican Ted Cruz. As a result, #betomania and #betofortexas pushed the favorite Cruz hashtags out of top-three list for the first time.

In case we don’t get around to updating this tomorrow, this is proving short-lived. While our daily tables stop counting at UTC midnight, we can see in our database that as of mid-Saturday, Cruz hashtags were already ahead again. For those with interest in the stats, we’ll be posting a comparison of the bot/trollbot ratings of the top 200 #betomania posters with the top 200 #keeptexasred posters. As soon as we finish it. Maybe tomorrow.

On the House side, both Democrats and Republicans were tweeting about the debate in Virginia 10 between Democrat Jennifer Wexton and GOP incumbent Barbara Comstock. Dems in the state were posting strongly about three key competitive districts, PA05, PA06 and PA07, with #electpawomen and #flippablue.
